How to Frame Your New Favorite Art Print
(Or Any Art on Paper!)
Whether you just bought a new art print or received one as a gift, congrats. That moment where you picture it hanging on your wall is exciting and a little full of possibility. Framing your print is the next important step, and it can make a big difference in how the piece lives in your space.
Here are a few things to consider when framing your new favorite artwork on paper.
First things first: What is an art print?
An art print is a reproduction of an original work, usually printed on high quality paper using archival inks. Prints come in many forms : limited editions, open editions, fine art giclée, risographs, screenprints. No matter the type, they allow you to enjoy beautiful artwork at an accessible price while still supporting artists.
Most art prints (including mine) are printed on heavyweight, textured paper and are made to last. But paper is delicate, so framing protects it from damage like creasing, smudges, and sunlight.
Why should you frame your art print?
Protection: Framing keeps your print safe from dust, moisture, UV light, and curious pets
Presentation: A good frame brings the artwork to life and helps it look intentional in your space
Preservation: Archival materials help prevent yellowing or fading over time
Even if your print was affordable, framing it gives it the care it deserves!
Framing options: from DIY to custom
You do not have to spend a fortune to frame your art nicely. Here are a few common options:
Off the shelf frames
Best for standard sizes (like 8x10, 11x14, 16x20)
Affordable and easy to find at home decor stores or online
You can add a mat to elevate the look and prevent the artwork from touching the glass
Custom framing
Great for non standard sizes or if you want something more tailored
You can choose the exact frame, mat, and glass type (UV protective, non glare, etc.)
More expensive, but offers long term protection and a gallery level finish
Magnetic poster hangers or clips
A casual, modern option
Easy to change out your art seasonally
Be mindful these do not protect the piece as much as full framing
How to frame your print step by step
Measure your print to know the size you need
Choose a frame that suits both the size and style
Clean the glass or acrylic panel with a lint free cloth
Secure the print with archival photo corners or acid free tape
Add acid free backing to support and protect the print
Close the frame and make sure everything is aligned
Hang it at eye level or wherever it feels right in your space
Where and how to hang your framed print
Hang solo pieces at eye level (about 57 inches from the floor to the center of the artwork)
For gallery walls, plan your layout with tape or paper cutouts first
Mix frame sizes and styles for an eclectic look, or keep them uniform for a clean feel
Caring for your framed art
Dust the frame gently with a soft cloth
Keep the glass clean, but avoid spraying directly onto the frame
Rotate artwork occasionally if it is near a light source
Check the hanging hardware once in a while for safety
Why art prints make great gifts
Art prints are personal, thoughtful, and last longer than flowers. They can be tailored to the person’s taste, mood, or home. Framed or unframed, they are an easy and meaningful gift for birthdays, housewarmings, or just because.
Other things to think about
Avoid direct sunlight: Even with UV glass, keeping prints out of harsh sunlight will extend their life
Humidity and bathrooms: Paper does not love moisture, so be careful when framing for humid rooms
Mounting: If possible, use archival, acid free tape or corners to mount your print (no glue)
Backing board: Choose acid free backing to prevent discolouration over time
Framing your art is part of the process
It might feel like a small detail, but framing your artwork is a way to honour it. Whether you picked it up at a local market, bought it from an artist online, or received it as a gift, the way you present it says something. Let it live on your wall the way it deserves to.
