Gold Fishes
“Gold Fishes”
This painting came from a place of joy. I had been thinking about how goldfish always look slightly panicked, like they are late for something but forgot what. I started sketching a few, and then more kept showing up. Each one with a different little expression, a different way of moving through the water.
It became a sort of group portrait. Not realistic, not planned, just a colourful swirl of personalities. Some of them look confused, some look very sure of themselves, one looks like it might cry. I let them be a bit theatrical. It felt good to give them that space.
This piece is full of colour and motion and just enough nonsense to keep it light. It makes people smile. That is exactly why I painted it.
