Happy Crisis!
"Happy Crisis" is a gouache painting of a heart-shaped cake with pastel icing, bright red cherries, and little smiley faces piped along the sides. In the center, it says Happy Crisis, like it’s trying to celebrate something that doesn’t really feel like a win.
This piece came out of that strange space where everything looks cheerful on the outside but inside it’s kind of falling apart. I was thinking about how we sometimes try to decorate our hard moments to make them seem okay or easier to explain. Like putting icing and cherries on a breakdown. It’s a bit ridiculous but also very real.
It’s light and playful at first glance but there’s something uneasy underneath. That mix of sweetness and discomfort feels honest to me. I think a lot of us know what it’s like to smile through something quietly messy.
