“Une bonne poutine”
This painting started as a joke. A friend told me at the end of 2023 that I should paint a poutine. I laughed but the idea stuck. Not long after I ordered one from Chez Gaston in Québec City, took a photo before eating it, and thought maybe I actually will.
Poutine is a classic Quebec dish made with french fries, cheese curds, and brown gravy. It is warm, salty, a little messy, and very comforting. If you live in Quebec you probably have a favourite spot. Chez Gaston is one of those places in Québec City that feels casual but gets it right.
I painted this at the start of 2024, using the photo as reference. The foil container, the steam under the clear lid, the brown paper bag in the back. I did not dress it up. Just painted what was already there.
This piece is about giving attention to the everyday. Even something as simple as late night takeout.
